We've had a lot of snow so far this winter! It's also been very cold, with highs around zero degrees Fahrenheit and lows well into the double digits below zero. Comfort foods are the answer to combat this type of weather. This weekend, cook and bake up some comfort foods to make your family and friends feel loved and well cared-for.

While comfort foods usually take longer to cook and are more complicated recipes, I've chosen foods that are still quick and easy for your weekend. Your crockpot will be well used, and the oven baking cakes and cookies not only help keep your house warm, but cozy too.

Get your family involved in the kitchen with you this weekend. Get a comfortable mat to stand on. Put some music on the stereo, light a fire in the fireplace, and have some good conversation with your kids while you prepare food together. Not only will you be passing a great tradition on to your kids, but you'll teach them about math and science while you cook. Enjoy your weekend, and stay warm and cozy!

Friday Night Supper

  • Salsa Swiss Steak
Swiss Steak has to be one of the most wonderful old-fashioned recipes. The beef is so tender after being cooked in the crockpot, and the fabulous sauce is wonderful served over mashed potatoes.
  • Refrigerated mashed potatoes, heated according to package directions
  • Pomegranate Romaine Salad
Take advantage of pomegranates at the end of their season. The beautiful red jewel-like seeds are tart and delicious.
  • Apple Crisp
To me, apple crisp means home and family. Serve this delicious dessert warm, topped with whipped cream. Yum.

Saturday Breakfast

  • Baked Omelet
With this easy recipe, everybody can eat at the same time! Usually omelets have to be made one at a time.
  • grapefruit halves, milk, and coffee
  • Quick Coffee Cake
Serve this tender and easy coffeecake warm from the oven. Your family will love it.

Saturday Lunch

  • Brie Apple and Bacon Grilled Sandwiches
If you have a George Foreman grill, follow the directions for this great recipe. If you don't, just cook the sandwiches in a skillet or on a grill pan, covering with a pan lid while cooking. Then flip the sandwich, cover again, and cook until sandwich is hot.
  • Apricot Bavarian Salad
Make this salad on Friday night and serve with the hot, melty sandwiches for a great combination.
  • milk
  • Easy Fancy Cookies
Get your kids to make these super easy refrigerator cookies topped with chocolate stars.

Saturday Dinner

  • Chicken Supreme
This is the most popular recipe here at Busy Cooks. It's just fabulous - the melted cheese and crisp bacon combine with the tender chicken for a spectacular meal. I sometimes substitute chopped onions for the mushrooms.
  • hot cooked couscous
  • Simple Green Salad
This easy salad is a crisp and cold accompaniment to the super-rich main dish.
  • Crockpot Gingered Carrots
Carrots and ginger are a wonderful combination. This easy crockpot recipe is beautiful and delicious.
  • Salted Peanut Chews
If you've never had a Salted Nut Roll, you're in for a treat! These chewy bars are sweet, salty, crunchy, and smooth. And if you love Salted Nut Rolls, you can have your own anytime with this recipe.

Sunday Brunch

  • Overnight French Toast
Oh, this recipe is so delicious, and super easy too. Like the Oven Omelet from Saturday's breakfast menu, everybody gets to dig in to hot and crisp french toast all at once; no waiting for individual servings!
  • Heavenly Cheese Mold
This salad is my favorite molded salad of all time. It's rich and decadent, so throw your diet to the winds and enjoy!
  • coffee and milk

Sunday Dinner

  • Vegetarian Slow Cooker Spaghetti Sauce
Your crockpot will slowly cook this delicious and healthy spaghetti sauce throughout the day today, filling your house with fabulous flavors.
  • hot cooked spaghetti
  • Strawberry Spinach Salad
Strawberries are coming into season, and for some reason they're really delicious this year. Try them in this beautiful refreshing salad.
  • Lemon Truffled Pie
End the weekend right with this incredible pie. The white chocolate filling is topped with a tart and creamy lemon topping for the best pie ever.
