Flavored syrups are added to coffees or even teas for an additional flavor dimension. This recipe is variable, so you can tinker with it as you wish, as long as the sugar:water ratio remains about the same.

Ingredients:
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup water
- 1 vanilla bean, split
Preparation:
Combine all ingredients in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Once the mixture boils, reduce the heat and simmer the syrup for 5 minutes, swirling the pan occasionally. Cool the mixture completely and pour into a glass container with a screw-top. Store in refrigerator for up to 4 months. Remove the vanilla bean before serving.To make a flavored liqueur syrup, add 1/4 cup liqueur of your choice to the syrup after it has cooled for about 10 minutes. This recipe can be multiplied.
