Bread machines make having fresh, homemade bread daily a real possibility. Rather than spending hours in your kitchen mixing, kneading, rising, punching down, shaping, rising again, and baking, you can set your bread machine and forget it. The only thing that can make using a bread machine any easier is starting with a bread mix.
Bread machine mixes can be purchased at a number of grocery and specialty stores, but you'll pay for the convenience. These simple mixes of dry ingredients cost more than combining the individual dry ingredients yourself. Quickly assemble a batch or two of the baking mix, seal in jars, and store in a cool place until you're ready to bake. This bread mix makes a classic white sandwich loaf with a dense but light crumb.
Ingredients
For the Mix:
-
3 cups bread flour
-
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
-
1 tablespoon nonfat dry milk powder
-
1 1/2 teaspoons fine salt
-
2 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast
For Baking:
-
1 1/4 cups water, warm
-
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
Steps to Make It
-
Gather the ingredients.
-
In a large bowl, mix the bread flour, sugar, milk powder, and salt until combined.
-
Carefully pour into a 1-quart jar with screw top lid.
-
Put the yeast in a very small zip-top plastic bag and set it on top of the flour mixture inside the jar.
-
Screw the lid on tight. Label and store the jar in a cool, dry place until ready to bake.
-
When you're ready to bake the bread, pour the warm water and vegetable oil in the bottom of the bread pan of your bread machine.
-
Place the dry ingredients from the jar on top of the wet ingredients, reserving the yeast for last. Follow the directions from your bread machine manufacturer when adding the yeast.
-
Select white/light crust color on your bread machine and bake the bread.
-
Remove the finished bread from the pan after the baking cycle is complete and cool on a wire rack for 1 hour before slicing.
Tips
- It's important to read the instructions that come with your bread machine before using. Heed any warnings and follow all guidelines for the best results.
- This bread machine mix makes a white loaf that is perfect for toast, sandwiches, or just snacking. It will stay fresh for a few days when stored properly and extra loaves can be frozen for later use.
