As a cookbook collector myself, with a collection of over 1000 books, I know a little about what to look for. Get the most for your money by following these tips, then go to your local bookstore or online and buy some books.
Read the Table of Contents
The table of contents of any cookbook, which tells you about each chapter, is a valuable resource when studying a book. The organization of the chapters, what each chapter stresses, and the chapter topics give you a clue about the book's usefulness.
Check Reviews
Cookbook reviewers see thousands of new books every year. They usually have the resources and knowledge to test recipes in the books so you can be assured that they work. Trusted reviewers include major news organizations, larger companies, other cookbook authors, and book list organizations.
Look for Books Recommended by Authors You Like
When you find a book you really love and use a lot, first check in the front of the book to see if that author has written any others. Then look at their websites, or browse in bookstores to find others books they may have recommended. These will usually be a good choice for you.
Look At the Simplest Recipes
This isn't something you would automatically realize, but how the author treats the simplest recipes will tell you a lot about their cooking style and recipe development. Very simple recipes should use the freshest and best ingredients, with explanations and instructions as full and complete as more complicated dishes.
Glance At the Index
The index, in the back of the book, plus any appendices, often will list recipes, course categories, and any special lessons or instructions. You will learn a lot about the book before you buy by reading the back pages!
