Mrs. Coverlet's Magicians is one of my favorite children's books. In it, Mrs. Coverlet, housekeeper to the Perserver children, wins a national baking contest with her version of bread pudding. And the Perserver children are left alone to get into lots of trouble, including putting a voodoo curse on the prim neighbor lady who is baby sitting them. This recipe is a variation on the loosely written recipe from the book.

Prep Time: 25 minutes

Cook Time: 40 minutes

Total Time: 1 hour, 5 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups dry bread cubes
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup milk chocolate chips
  • 1-1/2 cups scalded whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • pinch of salt
  • 2 tsp. vanilla

Preparation:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place bread cubes and chocolate chips in a buttered 1-1/2 quart baking dish and mix gently. Mix together sugar, eggs, vanilla, and salt in a large bowl. Gradually stir in the hot scalded milk, beating with a whisk until combined. Pour over the bread and chips in the baking dish.

Bake at 350 degrees for 40-45 minutes until pudding is puffed, golden brown, and set to the touch. Serve warm with heavy cream, ice cream, or chocolate syrup. Serves 6

Delicious, Guest Zoe

I remember reading this book as a kid. I always loved bread pudding. And the chocolate chips are a really good addition. I added some of that really good caramel sauce you pour over ice cream when I served it. Delicious!
