Whether a kid or adult, everyone seems to love apple slices cooked with cinnamon and sugar until soft and delicious. In the South, these are referred to as "fried apples," even though they are really sauteed on the stovetop and left to simmer in their own liquid. But if you don't have time to stand over the stove, not to worry—this favorite dessert and breakfast treat can be made in the crock pot. Just add the ingredients and let them do their thing for about six hours. An added bonus is that your kitchen will fill with the wonderful aroma of cinnamon apples.

Use these easy slow cooker apples as a topping for pound cake, pancakes, French toast, or waffles. They are a delicious filling for crepes, spooned over pork chops, and make an excellent dessert on their own as well. Try topping with some whipped cream or drizzling with heavy cream for a somewhat "healthy" dessert.

Ingredients

  • 3 pounds Granny Smith apples

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1 dash freshly grated nutmeg, optional

  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch

  • 1 cup sugar

  • 1 to 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces

Steps to Make It

  1. Peel the apples; core and slice them into thin wedges.

  2. Place apple slices in the slow cooker. Add the cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), cornstarch, and sugar and stir to blend. Dot with the pieces of butter.

  3. Cover and cook on low for about 6 hours, or until apples are tender but not mushy. Stir about halfway through cooking.

Tips

  • You can use almost any type of apple in this recipe, but if you choose to combine more than one variety, keep in mind that the apples may cook differently. A crisper, firmer fleshed apple will have more body while an apple with a mealier texture will become a bit mushier after six hours of cooking time.
  • If you'd rather use the stovetop than the crock pot for this recipe, following directions for Southern fried apples should do the trick.
  • If you and your family enjoyed these apples with breakfast, you're sure to love an apple oven pancake, which is essentially a Dutch baby baked on top of sweet cinnamon apples.
  • If you'd like to cook apples in the slow cooker more often, you may be surprised at the recipes you can make. From applesauce to baked apples to apple brown Betty, there are many ways to enjoy the combination of apples and cinnamon from your crock pot.
