Whether you celebrate Halloween or not, the holiday is a great time to experiment with food. And it's really grown as a holiday in the United States! Now you can find orange and black mini lights, pumpkin, scarecrow, ghost, and witch statues, and pumpkins and gourds of all shapes and sizes to add to your celebration.

Making food fun is also a great way to get your kids involved. What kid wouldn't like to make candy spiders, or the Spidey Family, cut out fun shapes from cheeses and meats and make fancy open faced sandwiches, or enjoy Sweet and Crisp Eyeballs?

Have a wonderfully safe and happy Halloween!

Halloween Recipes

  • Sweet and Crisp Eyeballs
Rice krispie treats in a new shape! These little balls look just like eyeballs, but they taste delicious.
  • Spidey Family
This super cute spider family makes a fabulous decoration or centerpiece for your Halloween party. And they're fun to eat too!
  • Hobgoblins
These cute little candy clusters are super easy to make. I love the combination of crunchy chow mein noodles and smooth and rich chocolate.
  • Crunchy Caramel Pumpkin
This wonderful centerpiece is usually made of cake; instead, a crisp peanut and caramel coated cereal forms the 'base' of the pumpkin.
  • Halloweenie Sandwiches
These easy sandwiches are very cute. This is a great recipe to introduce kids to cooking.
  • Blue Brains
Bleh - this really does look like blue brains! Your kids will love it.
  • Halloween Cupcakes
These cute cupcakes are made with cake mix and canned pumpkin; frost and decorate using all the great Halloween candies available in the supermarket.
  • Fingernail Brittle
I've always thought pistachio nuts look like fingernails - tint this easy brittle recipe with some red and yellow food coloring and it's perfect for Halloween.
  • Candy Corn Brownies
Brownies are topped with white chocolate and then a caramel-peanut butter mixture that coats crisp cereal and candy corn. Yum.
  • Pumpkin Cake Roll
Frost this rolled cake with chocolate icing and use the tines of a fork to make it look like the bark of a tree. Decorate it with gummy worms and spiders, and place it on a bed of cotton candy for a perfect centerpiece.
  • Quick Pumpkin Soup
This delicious soup is fun to serve when garnished with Halloween Wonton Crisps.

Of course, however you celebrate, keep safety in mind. I remember wearing those full face plastic masks that always restricted my eyesight and got all warm and clammy inside. Now, making up your kids with makeup is a much more fun and safe way to transform them into princesses, witches, pirates, and goblins.

If you're giving a Halloween Party let your imagination run wild! Stock up on CDs that make scary sounds, For a cool pumpkin, put a light stick into a sturdy foam or plastic pumpkins (don't use plug-in lights or candles) and place a small chunk of dry ice (be SURE to use heavy gloves when handling dry ice; NEVER touch it with your bare fingers or hands, and keep it away from kids) in a plastic or glass bowl, add some warm water, put it in the pumpkin, and let it mist. Decorate your pumpkin with colored permanent markers or use thumbtacks to create a design. There are also fancy pumpkin carving kits to make your pumpkin look like it belongs in a museum!
