Holiday parties and unexpected guests mean appetizers become a necessity. Nothing welcomes people into your home more graciously than a delicious selection of nibbles. And these recipes are tried and true. Some are make ahead, and a few are last minute. They set the stage for your dinner party and can even hint at the delights of the meal to come. Keep the ingredients for these wonderful recipes in your pantry, fridge and freezer and you'll be ready to entertain at a moment's notice.
1. Creamy Buffalo Chicken Dip
This wonderful recipe is like eating Buffalo Chicken wings, but in a form that's much easier to eat faster! It's really a cross between that delicious hot artichoke dip and Buffalo Chicken. Yum.
2. Hot Artichoke Dip
I love this dip and whenever I go out to dinner I order this type of recipe just to contrast and compare. The secret to the dip is to make sure you don't over bake it or it will separate. Bake just until bubbly around the edges. It's so delicious served with lightly toasted baguette slices.
3. Melon and Avocado Cocktail
This beautiful and elegant appetizer recipe can be partially made ahead of time. Make the melon balls and store them in the fridge, and make the dressing and store that separately. When it's time to serve, make the avocado balls and assemble everything in some beautiful stemmed goblets. You can also make this appetizer at the last minute.
4. Parmesan Straws
Cheese straws are always welcome as an appetizer. These, made from puff pastry instead of a dough, are light, crisp, and meltingly delicious. Gather in a bunch and serve them upright in a large glass or two for a pretty presentation.
5. Filo Onion Rolls
This is one of my favorite appetizer recipes of all time. And these crisp little rolls filled with cheese and onion are wonderful for the holidays because you can make them well ahead of time and freeze. Bake them still frozen, adding a few extra minutes in the oven, for hot and crisp bites in minutes.
6. Filo Roast Beef Cups
Anything made with those little filo shells is wonderful in my book. These delicious little bites were the happy result of a failed recipe. Any leftover filling can be made into fabulous Grilled Creamy Roast Beef Sandwiches
.
7. Guacamole
There's nothing better than some smooth, creamy, rich and nutty guacamole. It's perfect for a casual party. If you want to make something a bit more elegant, use this recipe to make Mini Guacamole Cups. Yum.
8. Antipasto Martini
This elegant recipe is perfect for the first course at a sit-down dinner. I love the combination of tender tortellini with crisp vegetables in a creamy dressing. Serve in some beautiful goblets with your prettiest small plates for a delicious start to dinner.
9. Devils on Horseback
This fabulous three ingredient recipe is sweet, salty, chewy, creamy, and crisp all at once. How many recipes give you the big four players in texture and test with just three ingredients?
10. Crockpot Sweet and Sour Meatballs
Everybody loves meatballs! In fact, if you use those great 'fake' meatballs made from mushrooms and soy, you can even serve a vegetarian version. This sweet and sour recipe is one of my favorites.
