When the world is harsh, we all need comfort foods. But not just any comfort foods - these use five ingredients or less (not counting oil, water, flour, sugar, and seasonings).

What is comfort food? To me, it's delicious food that's easy to make and eat that reminds you of a gentler time. For most people, that's your childhood. What were the foods your grandmother and mother made? Velvety soups and stews, warm quick breads and coffeecakes, tender meatloaf, macaroni and cheese, puddings, and casseroles are all comfort foods.

Enjoy these foods this week and have fun creating comfort foods your children will remember in the years to come.

Five Ingredient Comfort Food Recipes

  • Sour Cream Chicken Risotto
Risotto is a traditional Italian dish that is rich and creamy. This simple version starts with a rice and pasta mix so it's ready in minutes.
  • Crockpot Corn and Sausage Chowder
Hash brown potatoes add thickness and creamy texture to this simple crockpot recipe.
  • Tomato Cabbage Bisque
This marvelous soup is so easy to make and it's so good for you too! Serve it with Grilled Cheese Sandwiches for a comforting lunch.
  • Minute Apple Tart
Apple pie is the classic American comfort food, but it can be complicated to make. This simple recipe uses just four ingredients and takes, literally, minutes to make. Top it with butter pecan ice cream for the ultimate dessert.

Beans cooked to creamy perfection along with turkey, thyme, and tomatoes is an easy and delicious, comforting one dish meal.
  • Crockpot Caramel Rice Pudding
What could be better than a rich rice pudding that cooks in your crockpot? Yum.
  • Fettuccine Alfredo
Hot pasta coated in a rich cheese sauce is the ultimate in comfort food - and it's so easy when you start with bottled Alfredo sauce.
  • Scrambled Eggs Benedict
Scrambled eggs are always comforting, and in this special recipe they're used instead of poached eggs. Try it soon!
  • Gourmet Grilled Cheese
Two kinds of cheese and tomatoes make this simple George Foreman recipe so delicious.
  • Shepherd's Pie
A savory meat and veggie filling topped with creamy mashed potatoes is comforting, delicious, and nutritious.
  • Mac and Cheese Casserole
What could make macaroni and cheese more comforting? A crisp buttered bread crumb topping, of course.
  • Stroganoff Soup
Stroganoff is typically made of beef and a sour cream sauce. This easy soup has all the flavor of Beef Stroganoff, with none of the work.
  • Crockpot Mashed Potatoes
Well, this delicious recipe is not only easy, but you can make it up to three days ahead of time! Prepare it when you have lots of energy, then pull it out and reheat on a busy day.
  • Glazed Sweet Potatoes
This wonderful recipe is one of my favorites. With a green salad and some croissants, it can be a great vegetarian dinner!
  • Creamy Fruit Parfaits
Use the best fruit in season in these simple parfaits that are creamy, sweet, tart, and delicious.
  • Creamy Potato Bake
There's just something so comforting about potatoes! It's hard to stop eating this cheesy side dish.
  • Creamy Italian Chicken
You could add baby carrots, chopped onions, or corn to this simple recipe to make a complete meal. This recipe is very mild. Don't expect something highly flavored: that's not comfort food.
  • Baked Custard
Custard is 'nursery food' - those foods that are easy for babies and young children to eat. Yet it can be sophisticated too. Serve this custard with raspberries tossed with Grand Marnier liqueur.
  • Easy Beef Stew
This simple stew is perfect on a cold winter's night served with some cheesy garlic bread.
  • Brownie Pie
When brownie filling is baked in a pie crust, the result is creamy, dense, chocolatey, and simply comforting. Drizzle it with melted white chocolate for the perfect finish.
  • Old Fashioned Goulash
Tomato soup, ground beef, and lots of onions combine to make this fabulous comfort food recipe. Top it with some grated Colby cheese and let it melt into the casserole.
  • Chewy Gooey Bars
    The name says it all!
