Just a bit of chopping, and these ingredients combine in your slow cooker for a rich and hearty Crockpot Split Pea Soup.

Prep Time: 20 minutes

Cook Time: 10 hours

Total Time: 10 hours, 20 minutes

Yield: 6 servings

  • 2 cups cubed fully cooked ham
  • 1-1/2 cups dry split peas, sorted
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • 1 cup chopped celery with leaves
  • 1 cup chopped carrot
  • 2 Tbsp. snipped fresh parsley
  • 1/2 tsp. dried thyme leaves
  • 1/4 tsp. pepper
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 2 cups water

In 4-6 quart crockpot, combine all ingredients. Cover and cook on low for 10-12 hours or on high for 4-5 hours. Just before serving use a potato masher to mash some of the peas in the soup for a thicker consistency. Serves 6-8

NOTE: Split peas should soften just fine in this amount of cooking time. They do not need presoaking. If your split peas are hard after this length of cooking time, there is something wrong with the peas or with your water. If the peas are very old and dried out they won't soften. And if the water you use for making the soup is hard with lots of dissolved minerals that can stop the peas from softening. Use bottled water if that is the case.

Excellent - a keeper, Guest Blackstrider

Great result from an easy recipe. Make sure you add the liquid - it's hard to see on the recipe page. I might add a bit less of the water or more of the split peas since it was a bit watery but it's a great, easy soup.
